When you have spent nearly 40 years designing travel, you sleep in a lot of very good beds. You see a lot of infinity pools, taste a lot of tasting menus, and walk through a lot of grand lobbies. But there is a difference between a fine hotel and a memorable one.

The architecture of memory

When we asked Panache World Founder-Director Sanjar Imam to name the five hotels he has fallen in love with, his answer revealed something interesting about how discerning travellers actually evaluate luxury. It is rarely just about the marble. It is about the context.

“I tend to fall in love with most hotels that I stay in, and that has to do with choosing them well,” Sanjar says. “But the ones that are most personal to me are defined by the experiences I had there.”

Notice how many of his picks are lodges rather than full-blown hotels, and how often a stay is anchored by a specific view, a meal, or an emotional surprise. Here are the five properties around the world that have stayed with him long after checkout.

1. Huka Lodge, Taupo (New Zealand): Artistry on a plate

Located on the banks of the Waikato River near Lake Taupō, Huka Lodge is practically royalty in the world of luxury lodges. What started in the 1920s as a humble fisherman’s camp has been transformed into an 18-villa sanctuary that regularly tops global award lists (including Oceania’s Leading Boutique Hotel). It has hosted everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to Bill Gates.

But for Sanjar, it wasn’t the guestbook that left an impression—it was the quiet, meticulous beauty of the place, and the sheer artistry of the kitchen: “I wasn’t expecting what I saw there. It’s set in these lush green lawns, and while a lot of money has been put into the transformation, you can see exactly why. Every detail has been looked into. But the thing that surprised me every single time I went to the restaurant was the meals. It wasn’t just about what I was eating; it was what I was looking at. It was like artistry on a plate. I would say the finest meal I’ve ever had in my life was at Huka Lodge.”

Why we love it: Huka Lodge proves that true luxury doesn’t need scale; it just needs flawless execution.

Bonus: Read our review of Huka Lodge

2. &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (Tanzania): Drama at the rim

Perched on the edge of an ancient volcanic caldera, &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge is often described as “Masai meets Versailles.” It is a property that leans into theatrical romance—think banana-leaf roofs, beaded chandeliers, and silk curtains framing one of the most dramatic landscapes in Africa.

For Sanjar, the lodge will always be tied to the emotional high of a long safari day that finally delivered: “We had a long day driving from the Serengeti, looking for lion, which we hadn’t seen yet. The day was almost done, we were nearing the lodge, and our guide suddenly whispered, ‘Simba.’ And there it was, walking towards us. My day was already made, but the lodge is what blew my mind. I walked straight into the bathroom, and there was a huge bathtub filled with rose petals, positioned in front of a massive window looking right out over the crater. That stay will stay close to me for my life.”

Why we love it: &Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge understands that in a place as primal as the crater, the architecture should be equally dramatic.

3. Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park, London (UK): Grandeur in the Big Smoke

London is Sanjar’s favourite city in the world, and if you want to understand English grandeur without the stiffness, Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is where you stay. Recently awarded Three Michelin Keys (the highest possible hotel distinction) and named ‘Sustainable Hotel of the Year,’ the property balances historic Edwardian elegance with contemporary intelligence.

But sometimes, a hotel becomes memorable simply because of how it makes you feel when you open the curtains. Sanjar’s Insight: “When I checked in, they bumped me up into the Presidential Suite. That was the treat of a lifetime. The balconies opened right up to Hyde Park. From there, as a regular feature, you can watch the Household Cavalry trot by every morning on their way to the Changing of the Guard. That is as grand a sight as you can get in a city like London. The expanse of the suite, the views of the park, the address—it just did it.”

Why we love it: Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park offers the most privileged perspective of London’s daily pageantry. As Mandarin Oriental Fan Club members, we are able to provide our clients exclusive perks like complementary upgrades, early check-in’s and late checkouts.

4. Forestis, The Dolomites (Italy): Alpine minimalism

High in the Italian Alps, surrounded by dense forest, Forestis is a masterclass in how to build a hotel that doesn’t compete with its environment. This eco-conscious, adults-only retreat was constructed using local timber, stone, and glass, creating a serene, minimalist frame for the UNESCO-protected peaks outside.

It requires effort to reach, but as Sanjar notes, the payoff is immediate: “It had been on my bucket list for a long time. It took a couple of train changes overnight, but driving up, I knew exactly why I wanted to do it. It is the most magnificent scenery you will come across in all of Italy. The pièce de résistance is the view from every single room. The Dolomites are so up close you feel like you can almost touch them, and they change colour during the course of the day. The restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows, and the meals are a gastronomic delight. If you haven’t done the Dolomites, do it—and stay at Forestis.”

Why we love it: Forestis strips away alpine cliché and replaces it with pure, elemental elegance.

5. Samode Palace, Rajasthan (India): A heritage masterpiece

We finish in India. Nestled in the rugged Aravalli Hills about an hour outside Jaipur, Samode Palace is a 475-year-old architectural marvel. Unlike many heritage hotels that feel like museums, Samode feels vibrantly alive, with its intricate frescoes, mirror-work, and courtyards maintained with remarkable care.

For Sanjar, the connection here is personal—forged not just through stays, but through celebrations: “It is very close to me because I’ve stayed there several times and had the opportunity to organise several weddings there. For someone who has never been, you drive through rugged country, and then it just comes up like a grand stage set. You don’t expect anything like this. It is a stunning palace, almost out of a picture book. The rooms, the public areas, the hand paintings, the pool—all of it is preserved architecture, and you get to actually live in it.”

Why we love it: Samode Palace is regal Rajasthan without the commercial crowds, operating on a deeply personal scale.

How to choose a hotel that remembers you

“The hotels we stay in become a part of our memory,” Sanjar says, “and that’s because of the experiences we have within them.” That is the philosophy behind how Panache World designs travel. We don’t just read reviews; we go, we sleep in the beds, we eat in the restaurants, and we take notes. When you come to us, we match the hotels we know intimately to your specific tastes. So when you finally walk through the lobby doors, you aren’t hoping it’s a good hotel—you’re walking into a place you already know you will love.
Ready to find your own unforgettable stay? Get in touch!

Sanjar Imam, Founder Director of Panache World, reflects on how photographs capture what we see — but writing helps us remember what we felt. Through moments in Puglia, Rajasthan and Kyoto, he explores why memory deserves more attention than the camera lens.

When the photo steals the moment

Somewhere between my thousandth sunset photograph and my inability to remember most of them, I realized the camera was stealing more than it was preserving.

Several years ago I was at the Taj Mahal. The legend, the scale, the beauty and the perfection of the Taj was not new to me. I had seen the Taj in all possible hues a dozen times before.

That particular day, I was not there for the Taj.

It was to be a rendezvous of sorts. She was to be there. I had to be there.

My impatient eyes found her, perched on a marble bench halfway between the Taj and me, her back to the monument. For me, the Taj blurred into white insignificance.

Minutes later, she stood and walked toward me. As she approached me, I saw the signature tilt of her fine face, the upward glance, her eyes locking into mine, then the smile — partial at first, then plentiful.
No words were exchanged. She looked down, crafted her next step, walked past me and away.

In those minutes, I fell in love with her, hopelessly and forever.

No camera caught that moment. But I carry it still, more vividly than any photograph might have.

The photograph captures what is there. Writing captures why it mattered.

The difference between looking and seeing

Years later, I met another girl, Bhanu, eleven years old, in a Bishnoi village in Rajasthan. She appeared at a window of unfinished brick, wrapped in a pilled woollen shawl, her face solemn, sometimes stern.
I photographed her. That photograph shows you: a poor girl in rural India.

But when I walked over and showed her the image on my camera screen, her joy kindled blushes she could not suppress. Her shy smile, then beaming, brought out the cheer that is natural, naïve, nice in a child. Priceless for me in that moment.

I tried coaxing her into smiling again for the camera. The images did not do justice.
The photograph documents. The spontaneity of the moment illuminates.

I watched a young woman on Gion Street in Kyoto take hundreds of selfies for the perfect shot. She wanted just herself and the empty street so she could capture the traditional Machiya houses without people ruining the frame.
She tried endlessly. Focused. Determined.
Behind her, two geishas walked past — white-painted faces, elaborate kimono, the distinctive shuffle of geta sandals on stone. The exact thing every visitor to Gion hopes to glimpse. Rare, fleeting, authentic.
She never turned around. Never noticed. She was too busy with her mobile screen, waiting for the street to be empty of life so she could photograph it perfectly lifeless.
She may have got her shot eventually. Empty street. Houses. No people.
She missed the geishas entirely.

The photograph becomes the experience. The experience becomes secondary.
I have been guilty of this. I have stood before extraordinary things and experienced them through a lens, composing the shot, checking exposure, missing the actual moment in pursuit of its replica.
The camera taught me to look. But it forgot to teach me to see.

About twelve years ago, I realized something uncomfortable: I remembered trips by photographs, not by experience. If I lost the photo, I lost the memory. The image had become the memory. That felt like a betrayal of the place, of the moment, of myself.

So I changed. I started writing instead of photographing. Not immediately, that would be as intrusive as the camera. But later. That evening. The next morning. On the flight home.
I would sit with what I had seen, felt, noticed. Let it settle. Then I would try to capture it; not the image, but the experience of it.
The discipline of writing forces you to articulate what mattered. Why did that moment stop you? What exactly did you feel?
A photograph does not ask these questions.
Writing makes you choose: Which detail matters most? The color on the door or the sound it made closing? The woman’s face or the way she held her child’s hand?
Photography captures everything in the frame. Writing captures only what haunts you.

Choosing memory over image

I am not a fundamentalist.

I carry my phone but use the camera within selectively.
I photograph faces, with permission, because expressions are fleeting. I photograph details too intricate for memory alone: a door knocker in Marrakech, tile patterns in Lisbon that took someone’s lifetime to lay.

I photograph moments with family and friends. Not necessarily for Instagram. For them. For later.

What I do not photograph anymore: monuments captured definitively by others, sunsets I will see again, ‘proof I was here’ shots I do not need.

The rule I try to follow: I photograph what is irreplaceable and unavailable elsewhere.

Everything else of essence, I try to write about.

Words convey what cameras cannot see, the before and after, the internal landscape, the why beneath the what. When I write about a place, I am not showing you what I saw. I am inviting you to see it your own way. Your riad in Marrakech will smell different from mine. Your autumn reds will differ. The olive grower’s voice you imagine will be different from what I heard.

That is not a failure of writing.

That is its purpose.

The photograph insists: It looked like this.

The narrative suggests: It felt like this. What might it mean to you?

One closes a door. The other opens it.

Forty years ago, I travelled with film cameras that were expensive and limited to thirty-six exposures per roll. You chose carefully. Today, people take two hundred photographs in an afternoon and remember nothing. I take two photographs in a week and remember everything.

The difference is not the camera. The difference is attention.

Photography taught me to look, to notice light, composition, geometry.
Writing taught me to see, to understand why it mattered, what it meant, how it changed me.

One is documentation. The other is memory.

I choose memory.

And perhaps, in reading this, you might choose it too.

Do you find yourself aligning with this way of seeing the world — to travel for meaning, not just memories? Let us craft a journey that feels as vivid as it looks. Book your next trip with Panache World.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about grand gestures. But if for you, it is, we have the perfect offering for the Valentine’s weekend.

At JOALI BEING, from February 9–15, you are invitated to feel more, together—a quiet recalibration of connection through clay, sea, sky, and savour. After our stays at both JOALI properties, we’re proud to carry this Valentines Day offering that promises more than performative luxury, but presence.

Picture parasailing side by side, hands brushing mid‑air as turquoise falls away below. Or hands sinking into wet clay at a pottery workshop, shaping a heart‑shaped keepsake that captures a laugh, a pause, a shared breath. These aren’t add‑ons; they’re the point.

Mornings that feel like gentle kiss

Morning Kiss Valentine’s Breakfast at Turtle Tree House sets a tone of unhurried abundance. Above lush treetops and shimmering lagoon, plates arrive bright and generous—flavours dancing between fresh and indulgent, bubbles catching dawn light. USD 550 per couple (wine, champagne, or sparkling tea included). It’s the kind of start that whispers today could be anything.

Hands in clay, hearts in motion

JOALI BEING leans into creation as intimacy. The complimentary daily Handbuilding Pottery Workshop lets you craft a trinket dish or heart token—messy, meditative, memorable. For something deeper, the Shape Your Story Wheel‑Throwing session (USD 160 per couple) turns emotion into form: wheel spinning, hands guiding clay into a vessel that mirrors your shared path. No prior skill required; just willingness to get your hands dirty together.

Evenings that unfold

As light fades, The Evening Unfolds Omakase Dinner (USD 1,000 per couple at Turtle Tree House) elevates the moment. Sea breeze caresses treetops while chefs orchestrate Maldivian‑Japanese courses, each bite a precise celebration. Toast with wine or champagne to discoveries savoured side by side.

February 14’s Love in Bloom at MOJO (USD 295 pp) is bountiful romance: handmade pasta, local seafood, wagyu beef—plates designed to draw you closer with every forkful.

Sea, sky, and serenity for two

Adventure calls with Soar in Harmony Parasailing (Feb 9, 11, 13; USD 450 per couple)—gentle lift from waves into open sky, laughter echoing as the ocean shrinks below.

For horizon‑chasers, luxury yachts steal the show. The Aicon Afternoon Cruise (Feb 14, USD 6,450 per couple) drifts through sunlit waters with elegant canapés, returning for candlelit dinner ashore. The Maiora Romantic Sunset Cruise (USD 8,165 per couple) paints the sky in gold, with optional onboard sushi/sashimi feasts (add USD 730).

Wellbeing stays intimate: Tranquillity for Two (Ocean Sala + Yutori; USD 1,650) pairs a couples’ massage with five‑course omakase under stars. Souls in Sync Spa Romance Journey (150 mins, USD 1,350 per couple) unfolds in overwater sauna, rainfall showers, and side‑by‑side bliss, ending with champagne, strawberries, and petit fours.

Why this, why now, and why with Panache?

JOALI BEING’s “Gifts of Love” sidesteps cliché. No heart‑shaped tubs or rose‑petal baths. Instead, shared flight, creation, flavour, serenity—experiences that linger because they demand presence. It’s the wellness island at its most human: for couples rediscovering rhythm, friends forging new memories, anyone ready to let love feel effortful in the best way.

After our own Raa Atoll immersion, this strikes as the perfect counterpoint to JOALI Maldives’ artful exuberance. Where the flagship dazzles, BEING restores—together.

Book through Panache World for unbeatable rates, seamless flight logistics, and our relationships with the brand to turn this VIP experience, VVIP. Marhabaa to feeling the love!

JOALI Maldives is less a five-star resort and more a deeply personalised, art-soaked, multi-sensory experience— we think it is ideal for honeymooners emerging from manic wedding months, and for multigenerational families or close friends looking to celebrate in style.

Heaven is a place on earth. But the catch (there always is one) is that you’re going to have to be willing to part with a couple thousand dollars per night for it. Yet, JOALI Maldives, somehow makes this seem worth it. JOAL Maldives is about the kind of luxury that doesn’t need to shout; it whispers in the background, while you are treated like royalty by its people, or the planet peacocking the very best of its ocean vistas. This is luxury that anticipates your needs before you even think of them. Luxury that is weather‑agnostic. Even on windy, cloudy, or rainy days, there is solace, story, and plenty to do at JOALI Maldives.

From well‑living to art‑forward living

After spending two nights at its wellness‑centric sibling JOALI BEING, I boarded a speedboat and skimmed across the same Raa Atoll for a 20‑minute ride to JOALI Maldives. After back‑to‑back days of sunscreen neglect, I for one, was grateful for cloudy skies. As an extra treat, the crew fixed floats to the bow, letting us sit right at the front, faces misted by waves. A brief, yet welcome reprieve from the humidity.

The first thing you notice about JOALI Maldives is the impressive arrival jetty. It arches out into the lagoon in the shape of a manta ray—one of JOALI’s mascots—and sets the tone for an island where sculpture, design, and whimsy are ubiquitous.

We were greeted by a coterie of smiling staff, right hand on their heart in JOALI’s signature “marhabaa” greeting, including General Manager Shifaz and Sales Manager Farzona, excited to show us how this flagship differs from JOALI BEING. If BEING mends the body and soul, JOALI Maldives expands them in celebratory, art-soaked wonder. Where BEING is anchored in wellness and the “Joy of Well‑Living”, JOALI Maldives is art‑forward and family‑friendly. More about creativity and joyful indulgence than diagnostics and cryotherapy. Over 20 large‑scale artworks punctuate the island, all commissioned from international artists and woven into the landscape so seamlessly they feel found, not placed.

Villas for slow living and long conversations

The island offers 73 villas and residences, in both beach and overwater categories. I checked into a Luxury Sunset Water Villa with Pool: 108 sqm of interior space, unfurling into a massive 280 sqm footprint thanks to an expansive sun deck and a 35 sqm infinity pool that appears to pour straight into the lagoon.

Inside, the mood shifts from its younger sister JOALI BEING’s aquamarine minimalism to a more classic, quietly opulent design language. Think warm wood, soft neutrals, and thoughtful details. Two TVs nod to the idea that you could watch something here, though if you actually do, I reserve the right to judge. There are his‑and‑hers sinks, a separate dedicated vanity table, and a bathrooms fitted out in emerald marble.

Art is part of the architecture at JOALI Maldives. Apart from the 20+ art pieces on the island, you’ve also got some in your villa. Each villa features “Pearl”, a wall sculpture by Turkish artist Seçkin Pirim, an ode to the shifting aquamarine moods of the surrounding water. Another piece, an unassuming pineapple worth several thousand dollars, sat innocently on a table until my self‑awareness kicked in and I asked our butler to whisk it away before my clumsiness turned it into very expensive modern art.

Everything—pool placement, lounger orientation, outdoor shower—is clearly designed for slow living. Time loosens its grip here. Sunsets become events, not timestamps.

Jadugars: The smiling magicians behind the curtain

Each JOALI accommodation comes with its own butler, or Jadugar (“magician” in Urdu); ours was a sweet lady named Nouha. JOALI borrows the term from its Turkish roots, but it fits perfectly: Jadugars are that blend of logistics genius, quiet confidante, and wish‑granters who make remote‑island life feel frictionless. Places like JOALI don’t have physical front desks. You are checked in, by your Jadugar, in the comfort of your villa.

As Lubna Mukhi, AVP at THRS (the rep company hosting our trip), told us, some JOALI regulars postpone entire holidays if their favourite Jadugar isn’t available. After two days, I could see why. You may feel far from civilisation, but your wildest requests have a way of simply… appearing. Transfers, restaurant bookings, snorkel plans, forgotten toiletries, surprise celebrations …everything dissolves into a kind of invisible choreography.

Even ordinary rituals—showers, skincare, the walk to dinner, feel subtly staged and considered.\

The Story Behind the Island

On our island tour, Farzona filled us in on JOALI Maldives’ origin story. The owner, Esin Güral Argat, heiress of Turkey’s Güral Group, spent years searching for a remote, untouched island where she could marry art, sustainability, and a distinctly feminine sensibility. She fell in love with Muravandhoo and commissioned Istanbul‑based design studio Autoban to bring her vision to life: raw, tactile materials, organic forms, and an emphasis on softness rather than spectacle. It was first opened to the public in October 2018, and hasn’t looked back since.

There’s even an urban legend about a local named “Ali”, whom she met early in the process and after whom the resort was playfully named in internal lore. Our group of Indian travel designers immediately fixated on Ali’s fate—“Does he get royalties? Complementary villa privileges?”—questions which we await responses for. We won’t be holding our breath for them, though.

Maramas: A kids’ club you’ll be jealous of

If JOALI BEING treats children like young adults—with cooking classes and conservation workshops—JOALI Maldives embraces full‑blown play. Maramas, the kids’ club, is enormous and still expanding, anchored by mascots Manta, Turty, Mermie, and Pico the Heron. Expect weekly foam parties, themed activities, and a programme so well thought through that even the most jaded grown‑up will feel a twinge of envy.

It’s one of the reasons this island is so well‑suited to multigen celebrations: kids disappear into their own universe while adults oscillate between spa, bar, sea, and bed.

Beach villas and big‑deal residences

While the water villas capture the Maldives fantasy, the beach villas more than pull their own weight with privacy and sheer scale. Some clock in at around 865 sqm, with the two‑bedroom beach villa stretching to roughly 1113 sqm—gardens, pools, and shaded nooks for everyone to vanish into.

We toured the larger residences and got a glimpse into JOALI’s conservation work helmed by their resident marine biologist, Shameem. Two turtles had recently nested on the island, and he had live camera feeds of both nests on his phone; guests regularly message asking to be notified when the eggs are close to hatching. Science, stewardship, and story, all playing out on the sand.

Spa-ctacular wellness

Is JOALI BEING’s spa more extensive? Yes—39 treatment rooms and an overall focus on wellness is hard to compete with. But JOALI Maldives holds its own beautifully with a more compact, eight‑treatment‑room spa that’s exquisitely designed and includes a proper hammam. Treatments skew indulgent rather than clinical—think body rituals, facials, and massages that sit perfectly between “pampering” and “I might actually feel human again after this.”

For honeymooners, this balance hits the sweet spot: you can do a couple of serious treatments, but you’re never in danger of accidentally booking yourself into a wellness retreat when you meant to be on honeymoon. For the more hardcore wellness enthusiasts, the best wellness island I know, JOALI BEING is a short 15 minute speedboat jaunt away. They are more than happy to welcome sister property guests for a wellness day, or even just a meal.

Five spectacular restaurants

At this level of luxury, a thin F&B offering would be unforgivable. JOALI Maldives delivers five distinct dining arenas, each dripping with its own personality.

The gorgeous design of their overwater Japanese restaurant, Saoke. A breathtaking timber lattice cieling in traditional kumiko style alludes to the artistry in the kitchen (Photo credit: JOALI Maldives)

SAOKE: the showstopper. A stilted Japanese restaurant designed by Noriyoshi Muramatsu (the mind behind the interiors of Zuma addresses globally), all clean lines, bamboo, and a breathtaking timber lattice ceiling evoking traditional kumiko work. Beneath you, reef sharks cruise lazily. Before dinner, a box of chopsticks and sake cups appears; each piece is unique, and you’re asked to pick the ones that “call to you”. It feels a bit like Ollivander’s wand shop, and I naturally chose the chopsticks that most resembled a wand and a crimson sake cup. Highlights: A5 wagyu, sumiyaki‑grilled black cod (my co‑travellers, Nobu veterans, remarked it exceeded the original), Maldivian lobster, and pristine sushi and maki. “The only reason we don’t have a Michelin star is that the guide hasn’t come to the Maldives yet,” our server said, only half‑joking.

The highlight course in a highlight trip – A5 wagyu, sumiyaki-grilled black cod, and
Maldivian lobster at SAOKE (Photo credit: Rayhaan Imam)

Vandhoo: the all‑day dining restaurant serving South‑East Asian, Chinese, and Indian staples, and home to the breakfast spread that fuels both gym sessions and horizontal beach days. Amongst other things of note, children (and honestly, adults too) will love their peanut butter-making machine.

Tuh’u – Middle Eastern plates under the stars. Think flame‑kissed meats, smoky dips, and comfort food with serious polish.

Bellinis – where we dined the first night. Fresh catch cooked with restraint, exceptional ragù, striking Aquazzura crockery, and a standout dessert: avocado panna cotta with crunchy chocolate mousse and honey‑ginger sauce. It sounds chaotic; it works.

Mura Bar – the relaxed pool and beach bar. All‑day classics, a wagyu burger that ruins lesser burgers for you, and a whisky‑cigar lounge that fills up as the sun goes down. For kids (and adults who know what’s good for them), there’s a dedicated ice‑cream emporium with wildly fun flavours; the champagne scoop was a hit.

Operations in the kitchen are overseen by Kapil Sharma, Director of Culinary, whose résumé includes Taj, Four Seasons Maldives, and Anantara Doha—a pedigree that shows on every plate.

The Joys of JOALI: Doing (or not doing!) it all

JOALI’s activities programme is aptly named the Joys of JOALI. You can be as busy or as blissfully idle as you like. A week will easily go by without your noticing. Just know that most of these activities are additionally charagable:

House reef snorkelling – A guided reef snorkel with the island Marine Biologist, Shameem, showcases just how healthy JOALI’s house reef is in a region where coral bleaching is a constant worry. We spotted parrotfish, surgeonfish, squirrelfish, soldierfish, neon fusiliers, and a riot of other species. As a charming winter tradition, the team “plants” retired Christmas decorations in the reef, letting them slowly transform into living coral sculptures.

Mixology workshop – A playful cocktail session with Beverage Manager Vikas, where JOAgaritas (watermelon margaritas) flow, and you’re gently shepherded into creating your own signature drink. It’s less a class and more a story‑driven evening with excellent outcomes.

Sports & creativity – Padel lessons that genuinely sharpen your game, tennis, an art house for pottery, mug painting and glazing, plus multiple dive options (including night dives), flyboard jetpacks, parasailing, semi‑submarine rides, manta ray snorkelling, sunset and big‑game fishing. A fleet of four yachts, from 36 to 80 feet, stands ready for private excursions.

My favourite perk – ocean access from each villa. Snorkeling first thing in the morning?
You bet (Photo credit: Rayhaan Imam)

The Verdict

After two nights, it was hard to shake the feeling that JOALI Maldives is less a resort and more a beautifully curated parallel universe. It’s where honeymooners come to exhale after months of spreadsheets and spreadsheets disguised as guest lists; where families and friend groups celebrate milestones without ever feeling like they’re sharing space with strangers.

Paradise doesn’t have to be hedonistic. Here, it’s creative, playful, deeply comfortable—and designed so that every sense, and every generation, finds a version of joy that fits just right.

The Six Senses Kyoto is hands-down a prime restorative and wellness hotel inspired by cultural Japan and abundant nature! Panache World reviews.

There are few cities in the world as atmospheric as Kyoto. With its quiet lanes, temple bells, and seasons that shift like brushstrokes on a canvas, it’s a place that moves slowly.

And, right in the heart of this cultural tapestry, tucked into a peaceful corner near the Higashiyama district, sits one of the city’s newest and most serene additions: Six Senses Kyoto.

Six Senses Kyoto is a rare luxury hotel in the city centre that makes you feel like everything else is miles way! It’s a modern interpretation of a traditional Japanese retreat, where every detail — from the scent of the hinoki wood to the stillness of the garden — invites you to slow down.

At Panache World, we make it a point to personally visit the hotels we recommend, and we were taken by what Six Senses has created in Kyoto.

It’s soulful, restorative, and refreshingly understated. It’s a perfect fit for Kyoto!

Read also: Top hotel choice while exploring Tokyo

Right in the city, yet a world away

One of the most surprising things about Six Senses Kyoto is just how central it is and yet how completely removed it is from the noise of the city. It’s tucked into a quiet lane near the temple-studded Higashiyama district. It’s also within walking distance of famous sites like Kiyomizu-dera, Sanjūsangen-dō, and the Gion district.

You can spend the day exploring Kyoto’s timeless streets and return to the hotel in the afternoon to soak in the stillness and greenery. It’s the best of both worlds.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://www.panacheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-1-Six-Sense-Kyoto-1024x683.webp" alt="Located in Higashiyama district, Six Senses Kyoto sits in city centre and yet makes you

A grand entrance into calm

The arrival at Six Senses Kyoto is an experience in itself. The moment you step through the gates, the mood shifts. The city softens. There’s the gentle crunch of gravel underfoot, the rustle of bamboo, and a subtle sense of calm that starts to settle in your chest.

The lobby is open, airy and minimalist, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a perfectly manicured Japanese garden. The lobby feels more like a modern temple or a stylish machiya-style home, with warm tones, earthy textures, and organic elements that bring the outside in.

You’re welcomed with herbal tea, a warm towel, and the quiet sense that everything will be taken care of.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="478" src="https://www.panacheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Six-Senses-Banner-and-Photo-2-1024x478.webp" alt="The lobby is open, airy and minimalist, with floor-to-ceiling windows framing a perfectly

Rooms: Classic comfort, rooted in place

The rooms at Six Senses Kyoto are modern, spacious, and full of gentle nods to traditional Japanese homes. Earthy tones, natural materials, handwoven textiles and soft lighting give every space a serene, grounding energy. There’s nothing rushed or overwhelming here — just a quiet elegance that flows through everything.

But the real magic? The private balconies.

Most rooms feature a balcony designed to evoke the feeling of a traditional Japanese
engawa, the covered veranda that looks out over a garden or street.

Most rooms feature a balcony designed to evoke the feeling of a traditional Japanese engawa — the covered veranda that looks out over a garden or street.

Here, you’ll find yourself sitting on the edge of the city, tea in hand, watching the light filter through the trees or listening to the soft fall of rain. It feels less like staying in a hotel and more like living in a beautifully crafted Kyoto home.

The beds are incredibly comfortable, wrapped in organic cotton linens. The bathrooms feature deep soaking tubs, aromatic bath salts, and clean, minimal lines. Even the minibar is thoughtful, filled with locally made treats, herbal infusions, and sustainable snacks.

Food that feels alive

One of the highlights of our stay was just how fresh, vibrant and thoughtful the food was. The culinary philosophy at Six Senses is built around wellness and sustainability, but not in a restrictive way. It’s joyful, colourful and absolutely delicious.

Breakfast is a daily highlight, with cold-pressed juices, Japanese-style pickles and rice, seasonal fruits and freshly baked bread, all served in a calm space that opens up to the gardens. It’s relaxed, unrushed, and full of flavour.

At lunch or dinner, the menu is light and elegant — showcasing locally grown produce, seafood from nearby coasts, and herbs from the hotel’s own garden. The chefs work closely with regional farmers and purveyors, and it shows in every bite. There’s a gentle fusion of Kyoto traditions with global touches, always with a focus on clean, vibrant flavours.

Even the in-room dining reflects this philosophy. Thoughtfully presented, beautifully seasoned, and never heavy. It’s food that makes you feel nourished and grounded.

Everything at Six Senses Kyoto is built around the idea of deep relaxation and wellness — not just in the spa, but in the way the entire property is designed to help you breathe a little deeper.

The Japanese garden at the heart of the hotel is like a living painting. You’ll find yourself pausing to just sit and look at it throughout the day. Whether you’re enjoying a cup of tea, reading a book, or heading to your spa treatment, the garden becomes a quiet companion during your stay.

The Six Senses Spa here offers signature treatments rooted in both Eastern and Western traditions. Expect soothing massages with warm bamboo, facials using natural Japanese botanicals, and treatments that balance energy and body. The wellness team can also guide you through meditation, yoga, or even forest bathing sessions nearby.

It’s not a place you “go to” unwind; it’s a place that makes unwinding feel natural.

It doesn’t try to be Kyoto. It is Kyoto — modern yet grounded, luxurious yet simple, soulful without trying too hard.
Pizza, but not as you know it. A Tokyo fine-dining pizzeria that keeps intact the essence of Italian pizza but elevates it with Japanese seasonal produce.

Tucked into the heights of the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo lies a dining experience that defies expectation.

The Pizza Bar on 38th, with its modest name and minimalist seating, is not just a pizzeria but also a masterclass in precision cuisine, flavour, and intimacy.

An intimate setting

Step inside and you’ll find eight seats around a sleek marble counter. It’s a culinary theatre where each guest has front-row access to the artistry of the chefs.

There are no loud tables or bustling servers — just the quiet crackle of fire, the rhythmic shaping of dough, and the warm exchange between chef and guest.

This omakase-style pizza tasting menu is a rarity. Guests are guided course-by-course through a thoughtful selection of pizzas, each highlighting peak-season Japanese ingredients with Italian sensibility.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="609" src="https://www.panacheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Banner-Image-and-photo-1-1024x609.webp" alt="The pizza bar accepts up to eight guests at a time. Chefs guide the guests course-by-course
through a thoughtful selection of pizzas.

Where Japan meets Naples

At first glance, you might expect Neapolitan-style pies. And while that influence is present, the chefs here, often led by culinary director Chef Daniele Cason, have taken pizza into a new realm.

The dough is slow-fermented for over 48 hours, the tomato sauce made from San Marzano DOP tomatoes, and the flour flown in from Italy.

Yet what sets this bar apart is its fusion of local Japanese produce with traditional Italian roots: there is Hokkaido uni (sea urchin) atop creamy stracciatella, dusted with yuzu zest. Or a seasonal truffle pizza, delicately shaved tableside, layered over a white base infused with house-made garlic oil.

Every ingredient is introduced with intention. Every slice is served whole encouraging guests to eat as the chef intended.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://www.panacheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-2-Pizza-bar-on-the-38th-1024x576.webp" alt="Chief Executive chef Daniele Cason heads the pizza bar, which highlights the fusion of local

Theatre and technique

Much like a sushi omakase, dining here, you watch every motion: the gentle toss of flour, the shaping of the dough, the slide into the blistering custom-built brick oven. Within 90 seconds, a pie emerges: bubbling, blistered, and perfect.

At one point, the chef pauses to explain the difference in moisture content of local mushrooms being used that day: a small detail, but one that illustrates the depth of care at every step.

More from Food & Wine: Vegan cuisine in Kyoto’s Zen temple

World-class pairings & service

In true Mandarin Oriental fashion, service is intuitive and flawless. There is no rush. The chefs engage comfortably, offering commentary on their techniques and ingredients, adjusting spice levels based on your feedback.

The wine-and-sake pairing program is excellent. A Barbaresco here, a crisp Junmai Daiginjo there. Each glass enhances the texture and flavour of the course it accompanies.

For guests wanting a non-alcoholic pairing, house-made infusions and rare teas are offered with flair.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="667" height="1000" src="https://www.panacheworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Photo-3.webp" alt="Towering above Tokyo, the pizza bar at Mandarin Oriental has floor

The view: Tokyo at your feet

One of the most enchanting elements of The Pizza Bar on 38th is the setting itself. Towering above Tokyo, the floor-to-ceiling windows frame an extraordinary skyline: glass towers reflecting the city lights, and on a clear evening, even the faint silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance.

Reservations & practicalities

Reservations here are not easy — and rightly so. With just eight seats and worldwide acclaim, bookings open exactly two months in advance and are typically claimed within minutes.

For Panache World clients, this experience is curated seamlessly into your Tokyo itinerary — with prime time slots and tailored enhancements wherever possible.

Prices reflect the exclusivity, typically around ¥20,000–25,000 per person (excluding drinks), but for what you receive — artistry, intimacy, and the unmatched view — it is worth every moment and yen.

The Pizza Bar on 38th is a meditation on craftsmanship, cultural synthesis, and the joy of doing something exceptionally well. From its elegant setting and masterful technique to the gentle, reverent atmosphere, this restaurant is a true luxury experience.

Panache World x Mandarin Oriental: perks with every stay

As a preferred partner of Mandarin Oriental hotels worldwide, Panache World clients enjoy exclusive privileges across all MO properties — not just in Tokyo, but in Bangkok, London, Paris, Dubai, Marrakech, and more.

These include:

Quiet nurture, central location, famed dining experiences and easy access to the city’s top-spots make Mandarin Oriental a smart hotel choice while exploring Tokyo

Tokyo is a city of high energy and sensory overload, but the Mandarin Oriental hotel offers a different rhythm. The moment you walk in, it feels like you’ve entered a calm, private world that floats far above the buzz of the city.

It’s also refined without ever feeling stiff or overly formal.

Nestled in the Nihonbashi business district, the hotel occupies the top floors (30-38) of the Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower and offers spectacular views of Tokyo. But it’s not just about the view. Everything here feels effortless, polished and just… right.

At Panache World, we believe in personally experiencing every hotel before we recommend it. And, here are the fantastic reasons why the Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is on our list…

Location: culture, calm, and convenience

The Mandarin Oriental sits in Nihonbashi, a district of commercial hub with deep cultural roots that predates modern Tokyo.

It’s quieter than the chaotic hotspots like Shinjuku or Shibuya but still very central.

You’re close to Ginza for high-end shopping, within walking distance of the Imperial Palace, and just a few stops away from some of the city’s best museums, markets and temples.

There’s also direct access to the Tokyo Metro from the building, making getting around easy.

The Mandarin Oriental Tokyo is the perfect central retreat from where you can explore Tokyo. With a direct metro access under the hotel, it places you minutes from Ginza shopping, the Imperial Palace, and Tokyo’s top cultural attractions.

The arrival experience is smooth from the very first moment. The entrance is discreet, set back from the main road, and you’re whisked up to the 38th-floor lobby! That’s when it hits you — the view. Floor-to-ceiling windows open up to a panoramic sweep of Tokyo. On a clear day, you’ll spot Mount Fuji.

Check-in is done while seated, with warm towels and tea, and absolutely no rush. It’s that kind of thoughtful, gracious welcome that sets the tone for everything else.

The rooms at Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo are among the most spacious in the city, which is saying something. They’re designed with a warm, earthy palette and a blend of Japanese details. Think clean lines, soft textures, light woods and beautiful washi paper panels.

The beds are comfortable, the bathrooms are large and luxurious with deep soaking tubs, and the views from every window make the city feel like it’s on pause just for you.

Everything in the room feels thoughtful, from the lighting to the way your amenities are arranged. The minibar is stocked with locally sourced treats and teas, and the in-room tech is easy to use. There’s nothing flashy or fussy — just good design.

Panache World explored Tokyo’s kind coffee heartland, and here are a few superb brewing spots.

Imagine wandering through hidden lanes in eastern Tokyo, where weathered timber warehouses once stored lumber, now re-imagined as fragrant coffee roastery-cafés. That is Kiyosumi-Shirakawa, a neighbourhood where history and aroma entwine in the most poetic way.

Long ago, during the Edo era, Kiyosumi served as an industrial hub for paper and wood. Large timber businesses lined its streets. By the late 20th century, those warehouses fell silent. But in the past decade, third-wave coffee pioneers turned those skeletal structures into airy cafes. They did it by harnessing high ceilings, rustic wood beams, and vintage charm to create a cozy space for specialty coffee lovers.

From timber to aroma: the neighborhood evolution

Step into Kiyosumi-Shirakawa today, and the scent of freshly roasted beans drifts along canal paths and quiet streets. Cafes like Allpress Espresso, Arise Coffee Roasters, Blue Bottle Coffee, Cream of the Crop, and others have transformed old sawmill-style buildings into vibrant roasteries with indoor vents billowing steam and scent.

You can almost feel the past in the wood-clad interiors, now alive with the hiss of roasters and the low hum of conversation. What was once industrial is now intimate yet airy. A coffee culture born from craft and context.

On misty mornings, wander toward Kiyosumi Garden, a historical Meiji-era stroll garden with koi-filled ponds, stepping stones, and moss-covered stones that soften the city around it. Nearby cafe windows catch delicate light, and sipping a pour-over while gazing at pine branches framed in glass feels like stepping into a haiku.

The atmosphere here is unhurried, almost meditative: locals greeting baristas by name, visitors on weekend coffee walks pausing at multiple cafes, comparing subtle roast notes.

Among all these, Koffee Mameya Kakeru stands apart. A former publishing warehouse converted into a sleek yet intimate space, it offers a five-course coffee omakase (which, in essence, means ‘I’ll leave it up to you’, referring to the customer trusting the chef, or in this case, the barista to present their specialties) that blurs the line between tasting menu and art performance.

Here, baristas dress like lab attendants and guide you through multiple brewing methods: cold brew, milk brew, espresso, filtered pour-over. Each type is paired with a small sweet (Koffee Kashi). You may try beans from micro-lots and rare origins. Your barista will explain each aroma and flavour dimension.

When we were at Koffee Mameya Experience recently, I relished a coffee-cheese pairing: a vinegar-curdled milk brew filtered into a mini cream puff. Sweet, fruity, and didn’t even really taste like coffee by the end!

Prepared without meat, fish, or strong aromatics, shojin ryori emphasizes seasonal and local ingredients, transforming them into delicate works of art. Each course is a testament to balance, harmony, and the beauty of nature’s bounty.

The world of travel promises endless wonders. For the evolved Indian traveller, the desire is to go beyond a vacation; it’s about an experience that resonates deeply. But, how does one turn a vague yearning for ‘adventure in the mountains’ or ‘cultural immersion in Asia’ into a flawless, personalized luxury travel masterpiece?
Enter Panache World.

At Panache World, we do not offer prepackaged tours. We design dreams. Our commitment is to create a bespoke travel experience that is as unique as your fingerprint. Let us take you through the steps of our itinerary design process!

Step 1: The Spark: Your Vision, Our Discovery

Every extraordinary journey begins with an unhurried conversation. This forms the foundation of your custom travel itinerary. We do not simply ask where you want to go. We delve deeper to understand YOU.

This initial consultation is where our dedicated luxury travel consultant India listens intently, asks insightful questions, and begins to piece together the unique tapestry of your desires.

What inspires you? What kind of feeling do you seek on your journey? Are you looking for serene introspection, thrilling adventure, deep cultural immersion, or perhaps a balance of everything?

We discuss your passions: are you an art connoisseur, a culinary enthusiast, a history buff, or a wildlife lover etc.?

We consider the dynamics of your travel companions: is it a romantic escape, a vibrant multi-generational family travel adventure, or a solo quest for discovery?

This understanding allows us to move beyond typical destinations and match your travel dreams with bespoke possibilities.

Step 2: The Blueprint: Crafting the Core Concept

Once we have a clear understanding of your aspirations, our team of seasoned travel designers swings into action.

Leveraging our vast global network and specialized knowledge, we embark on extensive research and brainstorming. We identify unique regions, cultures, and experiences that perfectly align with your expressed interests. This stage is about connecting dots that others might miss.

For a family seeking adventure and culture, we might propose a blend of active exploration in Patagonia combined with a cultural deep dive into local Patagonian traditions. For a couple seeking romantic seclusion, perhaps a private villa in Santorini with exclusive access to local vineyards.

We then develop a curated initial concept. This is not a fixed itinerary, but a compelling vision. It includes suggested destinations, thematic ideas, and glimpses of the extraordinary experiences that await.

When talking to you, we may refer to this phase as the ‘TRIP PLAN’. We present these ideas, inviting your feedback and collaboration. This collaborative spirit ensures that the emerging blueprint reflects your desires.

Step 3: The Weave: Curating Every Exquisite Detail

With the core concept agreed upon, we move into the meticulous curation phase. This is where your custom travel itinerary takes on its final, intricate form. Every element is handpicked and integrated, reflecting our commitment to personalized luxury travel.

Handpicking Accommodations: We go beyond luxury ratings. We select properties that match the character of your journey and your personal style. This could be a historic palace with an intimate story, a remote eco-lodge offering wilderness immersion, a private villa with breathtaking views, or a charming boutique hotel steeped in local culture. Each choice enhances your experience, becoming part of your story.

Designing Signature Experiences: We integrate exclusive access and unique encounters that transform a visit into a profound memory. Imagine private, after-hours tours of world-renowned museums, hands-on cooking classes with celebrated local chefs in their homes, behind-the-scenes access to artisan workshops, or thrilling private wildlife safaris guided by top naturalists. These are the moments that distinguish our trips.

Orchestrating Seamless Logistics: The beauty of a seamless journey lies in its effortless flow. Our team plans every transfer, reservation, and timing. From luxury ground transport to private air charters, from discreet guides awaiting your arrival to perfectly timed excursions, every logistical detail is managed with precision.

Iterative Refinement: As we flesh out these details, we remain in close communication with you. Your feedback is invaluable. We refine, adjust, and perfect the itinerary until it feels right, ensuring every element is precisely what you envisioned.

Step 4: The Unveiling: From Plan to Flawless Reality

With your bespoke itinerary perfected, the focus shifts to execution. This is where our extensive network and proactive planning ensure your journey unfolds without a single hitch.

Comprehensive Pre-Departure Support: Before you embark, we provide a detailed briefing and a personalized travel pack. This includes essential packing lists and destination insights to critical contact information and 24/7 support numbers. We ensure you feel completely prepared and confident, knowing every detail has been anticipated.

On-Ground Excellence and Proactive Support: Our commitment extends worldwide.

Step 5: Cherished Memories and Lasting Legacies
