Missing Christmas? Visit the magical Finnish Lapland for snowy adventures, northern lights, and year-round festive charm in the Arctic!

Some places feel like a season. Rovaniemi is Christmas. Not in a kitschy, over-the-top way, but in a quiet and heart-warming way you felt as a child when the world paused and everything shimmered with possibility.

So if feels like December is going faster than you expected… if you missed the Christmas markets… if the mulled wine and fairy lights never quite found you this year, don’t fret! Finland kept a doorway open for you. And it’s waiting in the Arctic Circle.

Welcome to Rovaniemi, the official hometown of Santa Claus  and one of the most surreal places on Earth!

Where the magic begins: Santa Claus Village

You don’t stroll but tiptoe into Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi finland,  a year-round amusement park! It’s where Santa obliges to meet you any time of the year, the post office accepts letters addressed to ‘Santa’ and where you can get certificate for crossing the Arctic Circle. Love walking? Then wander through wooden cabins glowing with warm light. It’s touristy, but in the most comforting way.

Yes, it’s charming. And yes, even the most seasoned traveller ends up smiling like a five-year-old!

This is where Christmas lives when it’s off duty.

The landscape: a soft, white silence

Rovaniemi sits in a universe of snow-draped forests and frozen lakes. Trees carry thick coats of white. The air tastes cold and clean. And, on clear nights, the heavens perform. Here, the northern lights unfurl. Sometimes slowly, sometimes in a wild cosmic dance. It’s a show that rewires something inside you.

It’s a great place to observe and marvel at northern lights.

Activities that feel straight out of a storybook

Lapland excels at winter activities that make adults feel wonderfully small again.

  • Reindeer safaris through forests that look like old fairytales.
  • Husky sledding, with energetic dogs yipping to run and an endless white trail ahead.
  • Snowmobile rides across icy plains that stretch to the horizon.
  • Ice fishing, if you want a quiet, contemplative morning.
  • Glass-roof aurora watching, wrapped in reindeer blankets, waiting for the sky to bloom in colour.

There’s also something endlessly soothing about simply walking around—boots crunching, breath clouding, snowflakes drifting like tiny feathers.

Lapland on a plate

Food in Rovaniemi is hearty, elegant, and deeply connected to nature. You’ll find:

  • Arctic char, perfectly pink and buttery.
  • Reindeer meat, prepared with a respect that feels almost ritualistic—served slow-cooked, smoked, or grilled.
  • Wild berries, often transformed into jewel-bright sauces.
  • Creamy salmon soups that warm you from the inside out.

Restaurants like Gustav, Nili and Rakas elevate Lapland cuisine with Nordic finesse, while cosy cafés serve steaming mugs of glögi (Finnish mulled wine) that taste like winter distilled.
